This whole process of doing a video with a Powerpoint and audio track has been a bit

of an endeavour.  I’m thinking that once again, I have gone beyond the scope of the

assignment, which was a basic video or podcast. I really wanted to start the

learning process to do a video format that I can use in class.  A simple video of a

talking head isn’t going to cut it with make-up students.  Visual creativity, some audio

is the way to go.  So, although this road was rocky, this is a good start. I am

hoping this will be one of many videos exploring various topics applicable to the make

up student.  As one doesn’t always have time to review some make up basics, putting

on a non-YouTube video is better respected.  Most students see the posting of You

Tube videos as a low level of learning as pretty much everyone does this.

Again this assignment was very hard.  Taking much longer than anticipated. I

wish there were better in-class instruction and direction.  Better examples.  More on

Basic to intermediate video production.  My area of education NEVER uses podcasts as methods of instruction, so I feel this would have been a waste of time.

The assignments that I am seeing on the blog are mainly podcasts , and are pretty

simple. Some are very engaging, some not. Not much for video content. Plus there

are many with links that do not work.

Outside of more references, I feel that overall I have done a good job. The concept

was good, study not so good. I will look forward to the next paper. I am hoping you

caught the humour in the video.

I give myself 4.5/5

Self-Assessment—July 12/24

How is everything going?

To be honest, I feel a bit overwhelmed.   Its been a number of years since I have been back at school.  Although I am a master at pacing; juggling full-time teaching with a self-directed digital learning environment is very challenging to manage.  Plus, I have started teaching a Social Media course by default (teachers are off sick and retiring).   So, I am learning that as well— I am NOT a social media person.   Being in TV/Film make up artist, social media marketing is not needed, but I have decided to step up and learn it to get with the times.    So I can incorporate technology into my teachings.   There are NO classes currently using technology at this school!!   The students want to see the social media digital training upgraded, and I want to be able to create my own instructional, demo-based videos for class.   This course is helping with that, and my aim is to learn how to convert several of our modules into classes on  Google Classroom platform.   So, this course is a personal journey for me.   Honestly, it has been challenging, not being an in-person course and I wish we had more interaction with other students..   Additional learning resources “how to videos” and tutorial material would enhance my learning experience.   As I feel I am teaching myself; self-directed learning is very low-level on Bloom’s Taxonomy with good reason and proven research. The goal is always to incorporate as many learning styles as possible to engage the wide cross-section of student experience and aptitudes.

I do like the blogging process—I am enjoying that—it is become a place to vent and process my experiences in my teaching and PID program. I am structuring my blog to be a place teachers can chat, and relate experiences about everyday life and today’s learning and instructional challenges; especially in the social media world.  I am enjoying it and looking forward to continuing upgrading my knowledge and to enhance my teaching abilities and techniques for learner engagement.  I am proud of myself that I was even able to get it going.    I will continue to post interesting things I find.   And continue to learn how to use the different features of WIX, Power Point and various SM applications.

How my blog compares to other student sites?

They are either strongly relatable, or strongly educational.  With little in between.   The blogs that are strongly educational are good theoretical resources.   But outside this, I wouldn’t likely visit them.   I aim to have a blog that will be both.   Some good everyday teaching theory in simple language— jargon is often problematic and unclear—and some comments on everyday class maintenance.  Having the teaching theory understanding is one thing, knowing how to manage a class is another.

For that reason, I rank myself as Level 3.75/5.   About 85%
